Moesha Boduong has been a target of verbal attacks not out of a vacuum. She portrayed to the world a picture of all Ghanaian women that was contemptuous and slanderous to our hardworking women. Ms. Amanpour is displeased with the critics of Moesha and for this reason, she has responded in measure to silence the critics who had difficulty with what Moesha said in the interview granted her by the CNN. Unfortunately, I find it out of place for Amanpour to hold a strong view of dislike for Moesha's critics and her response to the critics is defective.
Agreeably, Moesha is not accountable to anybody and she has the right to speak for herself as long as she expresses herself within the boundaries of her personal life. This is a fact. On the contrary, problems arises when she assumes the position of other women and pretend to be the mouthpiece of all Ghanaian women. In this case, critics equally have the right to assume the position of other Ghanaian women and speak in their defense against Moesha's distorted views of Ghanaian women. The fact that Moesha trades her body as a means of survival does not in anyway account for how all Ghanaian women survive and this is why it's logically defective for her to have consistently used the phrase " As a Ghanaian woman". Remember this phrase was pluralized in the context of the interview she granted.
Admittedly, Christine Amanpour has the right to feel disappointed by the responses her interview with Moesha Boduong has generated but her right doesn't have the power to control and direct the critics critique of Moesha's denigrating statements ascribed to all Ghanaian women. As a matter of fact I even see her statements in the context of "ALL WOMEN" and also in the sense of reinforcing the Patriarchal system ascribed to African societies . Painting women as weaklings; something that genuine Feminist groups are striving to subdue. Let's forget the hypocrites who does what Moesha does to survive but are pretentiously condemning her. The fact that there are hypocrites among Moesha's critics doesn't in anyway take the juice out of the concerns raised by the genuine critics. In Europe and other parts of the world, we have women who do same things as Moesha to survive but that doesn't in anyway reflect the true state of all the women in Europe and the other parts of the world. The African woman, and for that matter Ghanaian women are not extraordinarily promiscuous than other women as the assertions of Moesha sought to portray. Christine Amanpour you gotta hold your breath and don't feel disappointed. If Moesha for whatever reason feels safe to live in America than Ghana, that's a personal decision no Ghanaian has the right to refute. She can be granted a permanent residence permit if her coming back to Ghana posses a threat to her just as you have worriedly stated in your response to the critics. But I can assure you that no one has time to spare just to physically assault Moesha as she might have communicated to you. Maybe she is playing smart pranks to be granted an American residence permit. Madam, don't be disappointed in Accra and Ghana as a whole. We have right thinking men and wonderfully virtuous women walking and working hard on the streets of Nkrumah's Ghana.
Ms. Amanpour writes, " So it was quite distressing to hear that one of our contributors, Moesha Boduong, has been the target of public shaming by the Ghanaian press and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Numerous media outlets in Ghana have taken to villainising this young woman based on an excerpt of the conversation included in a 1 minute, 30 second video of " Sex and Love".
I must state that I agree with you on how desperately the Ghanaian media has given too much attention to Moesha's story. You know why? Because for me it's useless and not worth the time; we have more pressing Economic issues the media must place their radar on. But, on the contrary, I strongly disagree with you on your concerns about Critics who are sharing their thoughts and frustrations on Social media platforms. Not until some people learn to paint a picture of themselves instead of negative pictures of Ghana and Africa at large, Critics will never be put to rest.
